Thought records are a mental exercise, where individuals learn to list the arguments for and against their automatic thoughts, which enables them to arrive at a balanced and rational decision after a critical evaluation of facts.
- Behavioral experiments – These are exercises that we use to train recovering addicts to contrast their negative thoughts against positive ones. These exercises help in bringing about a positive change in behavior.
- Imagery based exposure – In this exercise, we encourage our patients to recall a painful memory that causes negative feelings and ask them to take note of every sound, emotion, smell, sight, and thought attached to that memory. In each CBT session, we make our patients revisit these painful memories, which, in return, reduces the anxiety associated with that memory over time.
