Does mindfulness lead to happiness?

Mindfulness is defined as focused attention on the present moment with an attitude of curiosity, openness and acceptance, either during meditation or as part of every day life. Mindfulness has been shown to reduce stress, depression, and anxiety. According to a review of the research on mindfulness and happiness, published in the Journal Personality and Individual Differences, mindfulness has also been linked to positive emotions, well-being, and psychological health. Important aspects of mindfulness that contribute to happiness and self compassion and a sense of common humanity. Examples of Mindfulness: Yoga, Meditation and Sound Baths.

Dr. Wilson recommends two websites where you can start to learn about your own emotions, personality traits and strengths. At the VIA Institute on character, you can learn about 24- character strengths that lead to happiness and find out which ones you are strong in and which ones need some work.

VIA will also provide some links you can use to get started on improvement. At the Greater Good Science Center, you can learn about the 12 keys to well-being and happiness. You can also take a quiz to find out where you stand on each one.

What do studies say about altruism?

Altruism is defined as helping to promote the welfare of other people who are not friends or family without expecting any reward for yourself. Studies consistently show that altruism increases happiness, health and self-satisfaction. One reason is that altruism makes people feel better about themselves, which leads to more acts of random kindness.
